Vulnerability is a recurring theme in the work of visual artist Yvonne Michiels. Life in a metropolis and the transience of beauty are subjects she notices in the world around her and incorporates into her photographic paintings.
The women in her work radiate strength and dare to reveal themselves. Their eyes show determination and a fighting spirit: these are women who face life's challenges.

In works featuring women with Afro hairstyles into which metropolitan cityscapes merge, the tension between the model's calm gaze and the urban life unfolding above her creates a powerful image. Michiels uses this to symbolize everyone's search for serenity amid hectic modern life.

This book presents the first survey of Michiels' expressive portraits. It is a snapshot of her work and an interim tribute to the unconventional artist from Brabant who has entered the international stage.
