World Press Photo is proud to announce the annual compilation publication of the award-winning photos and stories from the 65th annual World Press Photo Contest. Featuring work by 24 photographers from 23 countries, it shows Yearbook 2022 the best and most important photojournalism and documentary photography from all over the world.
To emphasize the organization’s new regional approach, photo-book designer Sybren Kuiper gave the publication a new look. In addition to the winning work, the book includes jury reports and essays that provide context and reflection.
World Press Photo 2022 - Yearbook with the most striking images and compelling stories of the past year is available in six languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
World Press Photo collaborates with six regions worldwide: Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America, and Southeast Asia and Oceania. Entries will be judged and awarded in the region where the photos and stories were captured, and not based on the photographer's origin.
Within each region, a distinction is made between four format-based categories: Single image, Series, Long-term projects and Open Format. These four categories include entries that document moments from the news, events and their aftermath, as well as social, political and environmental issues or solutions.
Exhibition
At the time of publication, the World Press Photo Foundation and the European Parliament were presenting a selection of World Press Photo of the Year winners from 1955 to 2022 in Brussels, Belgium, through January 13, 2023.
The collection, which includes Charlie Cole's photo of Tiananmen Square and John Moore's image of Honduran toddler Yanela Sanchez, highlights issues such as the hope and resilience of protesters, migration, resistance to racism or the human cost of conflict, and shows the importance of photojournalism in shaping our collective memory and creating mutual understanding.
Major world events during the years the photographs were taken are outlined to provide context and invite the viewer to reflect on the past, present and future. Visual stories, documented by multiple voices, play an important role in understanding the world's most important issues. Freedom of the press, a foundation of democratic societies, made it possible to publish these visual stories.
