Amateur photographer Raymond Widawski was the public-choice winner of the SPRING photo contest on Fotografie.nl. His prize for submitting a photograph of a red squirrel licking a fresh green leaf was a Forex wall print from Fotofabriek.nl valued at € 55,00, plus a € 25,00 voucher for Fotografie.nl's Fotokadoshop.
Raymond Widawski: "I know a place in the Sonian Forest where there are red squirrels. I go there quite often because it is not far from my home by car. For this photo, I saw this little squirrel near a tree licking the plants. I approached it, but there was little room because several tree trunks were behind me. I only had my Olympus 300mm (24/36 equivalent: 600 mm) on my Olympus EM1 MarkII. It was very close, so I could not see the entire animal. I could not move farther away, and changing position would have hidden the animal behind the tree trunks. I knelt down, aimed at its head, and took a few photos."
A total of 184 photographs were approved by the editors for this contest, and the public cast 783 votes.
