The World Photography Organisation announced the shortlisted photographers for the Open and Youth competitions of the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards, including four Dutch photographers behind some of the world’s best single images taken in 2018.
The success of the Dutch photographers is remarkable, as the 2019 competition received the highest number of entries ever: 326,997 from 195 countries.
The Open shortlist contains works selected from ten different categories and includes four Dutch photographers in three categories.
Mariëtte Aernoudts, Creative
Mariëtte Aernoudts is a self-taught photographer based in Raamsdonksveer and has won two other awards in 2018. The shortlisted image is a great example of the photographer's love for blending and enhancing portraits with Photoshop.
Jeroen Beekelaar, Natural World&Wildlife
The work of the owl on a street lamp was taken by Beekelaar, a Drenthe-based photographer who is passionate about creating images of nature, cities, people and animals.
Alice van Kempen, Still Life
Van Kempen is on the shortlist for Past Life. As a self-taught photographer, van Kempen is best known as dog photographer, but she also focuses on wildlife, travel, landscape and urbex photography.
Oscar Van Heek, Creative
With the title Iron Harvest Print 2 the work is part of a larger series of images that brings together 24 stills from the explosion of World War I ammunition on the former battlefield of Ypres in 2018. Van Heek is a photographer and filmmaker who has lived in Scotland for more than ten years.
The four photographers competed in their respective categories and for the title Open Photographer of the Year at the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards.
The youth shortlist contains the top eight individual images from 12-19 year olds with the theme Diversity. Nominees come from all over the world.
The final winners were scheduled to be announced on Thursday, April 17. Prizes include Sony digital photography equipment, a trip to the awards ceremony in London, $5,000 for the Open winner and $25,000 for the Professional winner.
The shortlisted photographers’ work was also scheduled to be shown at the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition in London from April 18 through May 6, 2019.
