Are you heading off on a winter sports holiday this year? Capturing the best moments can sometimes be challenging. So how do you take beautiful snow photographs?
Exposure
Light is crucial when photographing during a winter sports holiday. In winter, white snow reflects the available light while the sun remains relatively low. This means you can spend the entire day taking photographs in beautiful light. Naturally, you want to capture the snow's brilliant white color as accurately as possible. To do so, remember that with standard settings, your camera will render the scene as an average of 18% gray.
This means the snow in your photograph will probably look slightly dull. To prevent this, use your camera settings to deliberately overexpose the image a little. Do not forget to set the white balance either. You can adjust it to suit the amount of light or shade. Some cameras even have a dedicated snow white-balance setting.
Action Photographs
How exciting is it to take some great action photographs on a winter sports holiday? They let you show everyone what you or your children have learned that year. For action photographs, choose a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second or faster. This will freeze the movement effectively.
Bear in mind that such a fast shutter speed can leave the photograph slightly underexposed, so adjust the camera's exposure accordingly. Preferably shoot a burst of images, allowing you to choose the best ones afterward.
Cold Weather and Batteries
Batteries and cold weather simply do not mix well. Batteries drain much faster in cold conditions than at warmer temperatures. Always bring spare batteries and a charger. It would be frustrating to miss a wonderful moment because your camera no longer has enough power, so check the battery indicator regularly.
Keep batteries somewhere warm, such as a trouser pocket. Body heat retained by thick ski trousers prevents them from becoming ice-cold, helping them last longer. It is also wise to bring a protective cover for your camera to keep it dry and prevent malfunctions.
Zooming In
Avoid zooming in too much, as this can ultimately make the photograph less sharp. For example, stand at the bottom of the slope and wait until the skiers you want to photograph are close. A little zoom is fine, but use as little as possible. If you take a good photograph from farther away, you can always crop it during editing.
