Time of the Signs - Henri van Noordenburg

Time of the Signs - Henri van Noordenburg

Until December 27, 2024, Gallery presents WM Time of the Signs, an evocative new exhibition by the Dutch-Australian artist Henri van Noordenburg (b. 1967, Amersfoort). Van Noordenburg is known for its unique process of manually cutting inkjet prints. He invites viewers to witness landscapes that juxtapose meditative beauty with symbolic, sometimes nightmarish, references to human industrial impact.

Henri van Noordenburg's work is highly process-driven, with each piece serving as an imprint of both personal meditation and historical contemplation. His use of a reduction technique, akin to sgraffito, reveals intricate layers beneath the surface of the inkjet prints that he uses.

He precision cuts into these prints using a variety of tools, creating contrasts between light and dark that draw attention to the sky and ocean. These atmospheric landscapes often oscillate between serene and foreboding, exploring themes of survival, destruction and renewal.

Cutting, scraping, rubbing and sanding: these are the methods that define Van Noordenburg's ritual approach. His process, often set to the musical cadence of Max Richter's minimalist compositions, reflects the undulating tension of both the music and the natural world.

The creation of each work is guided by personal emotion and structure Richter's “Exiles” album, which lends itself to the slow, rhythmic gestures that shape Van Noordenburg's pieces. Every day a new work is created, reflecting the ebb and flow of the artist's emotional state and the resonance of the music.

His works have been collected by prestigious institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and numerous regional galleries throughout Australia.
