'A photograph made at Rotterdam’s Nighttown in 1990, during one of the first house parties organized by Ted Langenbach. Annemarie is on the left and Sylvia on the right. It was also one of the first house parties I photographed. I noticed that everyone was incredibly extroverted and scantily dressed, with no restraint, and that made for great outfits.'

'I was tremendously inspired and alert, and I made four outstanding photographs that evening—something I have never managed again since. I used a Rolleiflex with a wide-angle lens and a separate flash. It was as though a whole new world had opened up. It is a staged photograph made on location that perfectly captures the spirit of the era. No, you cannot force a photograph like this—you cannot simply go somewhere and say, 'Now I am going to capture the spirit of the age.' It happens to you. A photograph made at the right moment, in the right place, and with the right eye.'
