World Press Photo launches Stories of Change – Beyond the ‘Arab Spring’, a book and online presentation. Stories of Change offers an intimate look at everyday life in five North African countries: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia.
The World Press Photo Academy offered a two-year training program for young photojournalists and multimedia makers from the region to help them improve their storytelling skills.
The workshops, held under the name The Reporting Change resulted in two parallel productions: a book and an online collection of stories. The stories offer impressions of regions that have rarely appeared in the news, providing insight into issues and people’s lives that would otherwise have remained unseen.
Stories of Change is also a visual chronology of the most memorable moments of the ‘Arab Spring,’ incorporating the perspectives of local writers and video bloggers from an insider’s point of view.
Somaia and her mother. Somaia is 18, and is studying Spanish in the School of Languages at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. She was born in Alexandria, to a simple family in a rural area far from the city. There, tradition held that if a baby came into the world disabled or blind, it should be shut away and that the family should behave as if it had never been born.
Somaia’s mother, who raised her daughter to be independent, says: “I can see, but I can’t read or write. My daughter is considered blind, but she reads and writes in three languages; she uses the computer and the mobile phone. I’m the blind person, she can see with knowledge.”
