‘I don’t find it easy to choose my favorite photograph. But when I think about it deeply, I choose a photograph of Pieter van den Hoogenband at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.’
‘What makes the photograph so fantastic to me is the emotional release of an elite athlete who had spent four years working toward this event. He had been beaten by his rival Ian Thorpe in earlier events at the tournament, but in the 100-meter freestyle he succeeded. The photograph was taken with the Nikon D2H and a 400 mm lens with a 2x converter because of the great distance, giving an effective focal length of 800 mm. For analog photographers, that is equivalent to 1200 mm; the exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/5.6.’
