'I took one of my favorite photographs on an American aircraft carrier. It is beautiful because it sits right at the edge of what was still possible with a digital camera. The photograph was taken in the Mediterranean, shortly before the war in Iraq. When I arrived, I had already seen those magnificent masses of clouds, with beautifully playful light streaming through them.'
'The ship stands out like a large black void in very bright surroundings. The crew is inspecting the flight deck. It reminded me a little of famous photographs of prisoners of war in Vietnam. You could tell from those soldiers that the war was going badly. There was already a sense of defeat. Now you can see what a bloodbath Iraq is becoming. When I came aboard, I did not have many memory cards with me. I could take only about 160 images. With that limitation, I found it a rewarding challenge to produce a strong photo story on a ship like that in just a few days.'
