In the four-part documentary series After Us, the Flood renowned photojournalist Kadir van Lohuizen visited low-lying regions where rising water posed an urgent problem—from Bangladesh to New York, Jakarta to Terschelling, and the Marshall Islands to Miami. These are cities and regions where rising sea levels were an everyday reality.
Kadir met people who sometimes took matters into their own hands because their government was failing them. What were their fears, and what prospects did they have?
Would the Netherlands still have the same coastline a century later? Why were local fishers in Jakarta resisting construction of the sea wall intended to protect the metropolis? What would happen to the population if a country such as Kiribati were threatened with complete disappearance? How was Miami dealing with salt water already flowing through its streets at high tide? And how would we handle millions of climate refugees in the decades ahead?
The result was a four-part series that presented a confronting picture of the near future in an accessible and thought-provoking way.
