‘I feel most attached to my latest work. I have just made this still-untitled photograph, an image that represents the next step in my career. To me, photography is an endless book—a book I always have to finish, and it simply keeps going.’
‘The photograph was commissioned by the bank Wijs & van Oostveen. They bought a very old building and want to fill it with art, including thirty of my photographs for the walls, each measuring roughly one by two meters. I have completed about twelve so far. The assignment is actually very simple: there is a theme—freedom—but that is so broad that I can take it in any direction. Because the building is several hundred years old yet contains many modern elements, I thought it would be interesting to create something in the style of the twenties. Classical and modern. Especially that orange glow, the feeling in it, the touch of Bauhaus and Art Nouveau… Yes, I manipulated it a little—no, edited it, which is different. Editing photographs is part of contemporary photography. I use every available possibility myself and have no ethical objections to that. Besides, this photograph has not been changed all that much.’
