On November 11, Sint Maarten, an exhibition will start in Amsterdam-Noord that is also attractive for children: The Light Jewel of Zamenhof by Jan van der Horn. Elves have flown from the Vliegenbos to the Zamenhof site of Anton and Jan, the former Verschure Shipyard, where they shine in the dark. Most works of art are placed low, so children can easily admire the magic of the luminous photos.
The light gem consists of a number of staged photographs by the Amsterdam artist Jan van der Horn. He makes fairytale, magical photographic work. He exhibits these in light boxes, like a slide. His photo works light up in the windows of business premises in North Amsterdam, behind the windows.
Such as in the studio of Linda Milder, who has created a beautiful, fairytale atmosphere. The elves have settled in the building of Zamenhof 108. Because they are low, even preschoolers from Vogeldorp can see them well. Especially with Sint Maarten, the festival of lights and lanterns.
The luminous photos appear in all kinds of shop windows in the Zamenhof. It is a nice contrast that the staged photography has now found its place in the old building of the Verschure Shipyard, creative and hip low-budget entrepreneurs. It is precisely there, in that former industrial fringe along the IJ, that a magical atmosphere is created.
In the hall of Zamenhof 108 there is a moon girl and a Tinkerbell. At David's Physiobox there is elf Sarah, in Mathilde and René's Zen meditation center the light of the elves Vlinder and Suze shines.
At the designer Maarten Olden's unit 106 the elves are at child height, at the Kung Fu Academy UCT there are elves Anee and Chrisje. Restaurant “Hotel” de Goudfazant by Niels and Frederic also participates in Het Lichtjuweel and has decorated an enchanting corner.
Magical spheres and fairy tales are an important theme in the work of Jan van der Horn. He tries to capture the 'magic hour' in his images, the moment of twilight. He allows elves and other fairytale figures to pose in his self-created magical landscapes.
The artist has previously realized this art project with great success in Egmond, Wassenaar, Leiden and Voorschoten. Last year, his Light Jewel provided a magical effect during dark days at the Kalkmarkt in Amsterdam.
'The Light Jewel' by Jan van der Horn can be seen for ten days from November 11 at the Zamenhof and at hotel restaurant De Goudfazant in Amsterdam-Noord.
