Every day, thousands of migrants leave Central America. For years they have been fleeing violence, poverty, and terror in their countries. They travel through Mexico in an attempt to reach the United States in search of a better life.

At the time of this article, the widely hated Trump wall along the U.S.–Mexico border remained an almost insurmountable barrier under President Biden.

The journey often requires covering hundreds of miles on foot, amid constant fear of being detained and sent back—or, in some cases, disappearing altogether. Before La Caravana del Diablo reaches the Mexican border, many men, women, and children have already died from the hardships they endured while seeking a better life.

Photographer Ada Trillo has made it her mission to document this harrowing situation. In La Caravana del Diablo , she does not look away but confronts it directly. Ada shows that each of these thousands of migrants is an individual—a person with family, fear, hope, and dreams. By making a genuine connection, Ada succeeds in portraying people with strength during one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives.
