Insta360 Luna Ultra with Leica lenses

Insta360 Luna Ultra: 8K gimbal camera with Leica lenses

With the Luna Ultra, Insta360 is making a more decisive move into the compact gimbal camera segment. The camera is designed for vloggers, filmmakers, and content creators who want stable video footage without carrying a separate gimbal, mirrorless camera, and extra accessories.

The Luna Ultra combines 3-axis mechanical stabilization with two Leica lenses, 8K video, and a detachable screen that also works as a wireless remote control. Insta360 introduced the Luna Ultra in June 2026 as its first Leica co-engineered gimbal camera in this category.

Main lens with 1-inch sensor

The main camera uses a 1-inch 8K sensor with a Leica Summicron lens. The Luna Ultra records at up to 8K and 30 frames per second. For slow motion, it offers 4K at up to 120 fps and 1080p at up to 240 fps. According to Insta360, the sensor provides up to 14 stops of dynamic range.

The camera also supports Dolby Vision and 10-bit I-Log, providing more flexibility for color correction in post-production.

Telephoto lens for portraits and details

Alongside the main lens, the Luna Ultra has a second camera system with a 1/1.3-inch sensor and a telephoto lens. It is primarily intended for portraits, details, and close-ups from a distance. The camera offers up to 12x zoom, including 6x lossless zoom. This makes the Luna Ultra more versatile than a traditional pocket camera with a single fixed wide-angle lens. For creators who regularly switch between wide shots, talking-head videos, and details, that can be a clear advantage.

Detachable screen doubles as a remote control

One notable feature is the detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen. The screen can be used separately from the camera to monitor the image and control the camera wirelessly. HD video transmission works at distances of up to approximately 20 meters. The screen also has a microphone, allowing you to record audio during solo shoots or remote interviews without standing directly beside the camera.

Mechanical stabilization and AI tracking

Stabilization is handled by a physical 3-axis gimbal, supplemented by electronic stabilization. Insta360 also uses a Triple AI Chip system for image processing, autofocus, and subject tracking.

Deep Track 5.0 helps keep people or subjects in the frame, even when there is movement in the scene. This makes the camera appealing for travel videos, reports, backstage content, events, and vlogs where creators film themselves.

For photography

Although the Luna Ultra was developed primarily as a video camera, it also offers clear benefits for photography. The camera produces 37-megapixel UltraPhoto files, providing enough resolution for cropping, web publications, and social content.

The 200-megapixel panorama mode is useful for landscapes, interiors, and travel photography, while the built-in gimbal stabilization can also help produce sharper handheld photos.

Combined with the 1-inch main sensor, Leica color profiles, and additional telephoto camera, the Luna Ultra is primarily a compact hybrid camera for creators who want to switch quickly between video, wide shots, details, and panoramas.

Cinematic look

The Essential Bundle includes the Luna Ultra, a Black Mist Filter, and a Carry Bag, among other items. The Black Mist Filter softens bright highlights and gives lights, sunlight, and reflections a subtle glow, while dark areas remain relatively contrasty. This effect is often used to slightly soften digital sharpness and render skin tones more gently.

The magnetic mount allows the filter to be placed on the lens quickly, without threads or additional tools.

Carry Bag

The included Carry Bag is designed to hold the Luna Ultra and a few accessories in a compact package. The bag is lightweight, water-repellent, and fitted with adjustable hook-and-loop dividers. That fits the idea behind the camera: a small kit that is ready to use quickly, without immediately requiring a full camera bag.

Difference from DJI Osmo Pocket 4

The Luna Ultra is better compared with the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 than with Insta360’s own X3 or X5 cameras. The X3 and X5 are primarily 360-degree cameras, while the Luna Ultra and Osmo Pocket 4 are both compact gimbal cameras for directed handheld filming. The DJI Osmo Pocket 4 focuses on being a small, fast all-in-one solution with a 1-inch sensor, 4K video at up to 240 fps, ActiveTrack 7.0, and built-in storage.

The Insta360 Luna Ultra takes a different approach with 8K video, Leica optics, a second telephoto camera, and a detachable screen for remote control. This makes the Pocket 4 particularly strong as a compact vlog camera with high-frame-rate slow motion, while the Luna Ultra places more emphasis on resolution, lens variety, and a cinematic visual style.

Conclusion

The Insta360 Luna Ultra is neither a conventional action camera nor a traditional compact camera. Instead, it is a small, stabilized video camera for creators who film frequently on the go and want to switch quickly between wide angle, portrait, detail, and movement. The dual-camera system, detachable screen, and built-in AI tracking in particular make the Luna Ultra an interesting new contender in the premium pocket gimbal camera segment.

The Insta360 Luna Ultra Standard Bundle costs € 729,00 in Cosmic Black and Stellar White.
