How to: Increase the Tonal Range of Your Photo
To increase a photo’s tonal range, follow these steps in the Basic panel:
• Hold down Shift and double-click the Whites slider; it changes to Auto Whites.
• Repeat with the Blacks slider; it changes to Auto Blacks.
This method automatically sets the white and black points in your photo to their maximum values, increasing the tonal range without losing detail (“clipping”). (This method can occasionally overexpose the highlights very slightly.)
This technique is similar to manually setting the white and black points in Photoshop, but automated.
It is advisable to perform this procedure first when editing a photo, so that you start with maximum tonal range. After the white and black points are set, you can still adjust the exposure to lighten or darken the photo.
