Traditional Dutch crafts are on the verge of disappearing. That was the reason for photographer Ezra Böhm to travel throughout the country for three years in search of the most special, still existing crafts, in order to capture them in all their glory. In this way he hopes to inspire future generations for this intangible heritage, which is so important to our culture and is part of our identity.
Ezra photographed a total of seventeen crafts as they are still performed today and with the photo series shows the enormous diversity, wealth and importance of this age-old Dutch work culture.
In Forgotten Heroes a craft is highlighted in each chapter. Not only does the book contain more than one hundred and fifty beautiful photos in more than two hundred pages, the subjects also have their say. They talk about special traditions and the importance of these professions to The Netherlands and what it takes to save age-old crafts from disappearing.
Ezra Böhm (2000) is an art and advertising photographer based in Utrecht. His fascination with traditional cultures began in Malaysia, where he visited an indigenous tribe at the age of 11. During his studies at the Fotovakschool he noticed that he felt little cultural connection with the culture of his own country.
That's why he started using his camera to explore his own cultural roots, first with the award-winning series The Identity of Holland and then with the project Forgotten Heroes.
In addition to his art, Ezra carries out various assignments in the field of advertising, fashion, portrait, architecture and landscape through photography, film and retouching.
His work has received several awards including 'Fresh Eyes 2020 - One of 100 emerging talents of Europe', gold at the Nd Awards 2021, and a first prize at the IPA Photography Awards 2024.
