Focus on photography - Analog photography

Focus on photography - Analog photography - Jan Willem Hage

According to Eduard de Kam, the real difference between analog and digital is in Analog Photography, that when recording on film, the properties of the recording material itself become part of the photo. The grain is the clearest example of this. A digital photo is really just the image itself, captured in numbers. An analogue photo makes its own contribution to the end result. Recording on really large film formats also produces photos with a special atmosphere and character.

And analog photography is back again! Or actually, it never completely went away. For a while it seemed that digital photography had made all the old techniques for taking photos obsolete. But the charm of working with old cameras, film, chemistry and a dark room that includes the tension of waiting for the result has clearly risen in popularity again.

Analog photography EduardDeKam

This book offers photographers who are not or insufficiently familiar with this previous way of working a good helping hand to get started. There is a small overview of the types of cameras you can choose from. What type of film goes in there and how do you place it? film in the camera first and later in the developing tank if you want to work in the darkroom yourself.

The technical basics of photography are discussed, as with most older cameras you have to set everything yourself to get a properly exposed negative. Consider the ISO value for the film sensitivity, the exposure time and the aperture that you must then set based on the light measurement.

Digital registration is much more technical, and therefore much more insensitive for a number of photographers.

The things you need for working in the darkroom to develop the exposed film and then making test strips and prints, including the techniques known as 'pressing' and 'holding', are all explained so that you at least know where to start to get the print you really like.

Attention is also paid to some alternative photographic techniques such as the blueprint and different options for developing films such as 'cross-processing'. Naturally, attention is also paid to the combination of analogue recording and digital processing.
