'Bombay. It was the first photograph that made me think: I have made a good photograph; I have extracted something truly remarkable from reality. It is the cover image of my first book, India (1987). You see a small car driving along a flooded street.'

'The car itself is also largely submerged. You see someone driving, gripping the steering wheel tightly so as not to drown or something, while a very cheerful woman waves at me through the window. Optimistic and absurd. The emotion I felt while making the photograph is fully reflected in the image.'
