The ultra-compact design of the RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS USM, weighing just 2.59 kg, makes it the lightest zoom lens in its category - just 190 grams heavier than the fixed focal length EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM. This new lens combines the versatility of a zoom lens with the quality and performance of a prime lens.
The lens works with Canon's range of RF extenders. The RF 1.4x extender allows the full zoom range to be used to emulate a 140-420mm F4 lens, while the RF 2x extender can create a 200-600mm F5.6 lens. This makes the RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS USM ideal for sports, news and nature photographers who prefer not to lenses to switch.
Furthermore, this is the first super-telephoto RF lens with a control ring and a new, adjustable L.FN button within easy reach. These enhanced personalization options and expanded manual controls meet the demands and expectations of professionals.
The wide and constant f/2.8 aperture is perfect for shooting in low light and controlling depth of field for shots with extra impact. In addition, the nine-blade circular aperture provides attractive bokeh properties.
The basic image stabilization of 5.5 stops increases to 6 stops when the lens is combined with in-body stabilization. This stabilization is possible due to fast RF communication and offers additional advantages when photographing in situations with little light and longer shutter speeds. This is ideal for both photography and handheld videography when capturing moving subjects. The system can even recognize when a tripod is in use, after which the image stabilization is automatically turned off.
The RF 100-300mm F2.8L IS USM is Canon's first super-telephoto zoom lens with a Dual Nano USM motor, which ensures fast, smooth and virtually silent AF.
The lens features dust and weather resistant seals, and has fluorine coatings for easy cleaning of the outer element. The same heat shield coating has been used on the outside of this RF lens as on the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM and EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM – this is now standard on all RF super-telephoto lenses, which reduces the temperature inside the lens when shooting in warm locations. The lens hood ET-124, lens soft case LS100-300 and lens cap E-122 provide extra support and protection.
