Tom van der Leij is a photographer, journalist and Amsterdam native. He received his first camera when he was ten years old and has kept looking, travelling and recording ever since. His photographic style is documentary, direct and lively, with close attention to people, animals, nature and the distinct character of a place.

As a documentary and travel photographer, not many things make me happier than traveling, diving into new cultures, and taking photos.
About the photographer
Tom van der Leij is a photographer and writer. His photographs and stories have been published in Het Parool, Ontdek Afrika, IS, Onze Wereld, De Pers, Columbus Magazine and Fotografie.nl, among others.
After studying journalism at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, Tom began working professionally as a photographer. His work has taken him to many different parts of the world, from Niger to the Amazon and Papua New Guinea. He photographed and wrote for newspapers, travel magazines, guides and NGOs. Closer to home, he also finds inspiration in Amsterdam and in the landscape around Schoorl.
In his assignments, Tom looks for images that feel real. He likes to work actively and outdoors, but can also create a natural atmosphere indoors. He brings his experience as a travel and documentary photographer to portraits, reportages, family shoots, children’s photography, animal photography, weddings, maternity and baby photography, corporate events and other photoshoots.
A recurring feature in his work is the combination of movement, personality and environment. Where appropriate, Tom also uses drone photography, allowing him to show a scene from another perspective. The result is a visual story that not only shows what something looked like, but also says something about the atmosphere, the place and the people involved.
