Rob van Woerkom

Amstelveen

For 16 years I was a ballet dancer with Dutch National Ballet. During that time I also began photographing. Throughout my life in ballet, dance was the most important source of inspiration for my photographs.

I still photograph ballet dancers; they continue to fascinate me. That is what I want to show in my work.

From the profile

Dancers captured at the intersection of movement and stillness, with each image feeling like a carefully composed moment where dance, light and photographic timing come together.

About the photographer

Photographer Rob van Woerkom began his career as a ballet dancer, a fascination that started in his youth. To him, dancers were an example of artistic maturity. They seemed to possess a certain superiority, as if they carried a deep secret that could only be revealed through dance. Words did not seem enough; only dance could translate that mystery.
