About the photographer
Bastiaan Heus (1974) is a photographer in Haarlem, specializing in sports photography and portrait photography. Sport and photography came together early in his life: as a child, he stood beside his father, sports photographer Hans Heus, camera in hand at matches. After a period as a sports instructor, Bastiaan began working professionally as a photographer in 1999. That background is visible in his work: he has a strong feel for movement, concentration, physical effort and the decisive moment when posture, strength and character come together.
Alongside sports portraits and reportages, Bastiaan also creates strong portrait series in which people are often presented directly and without unnecessary embellishment. His work has received several awards at the Zilveren Camera, including series about Mud Masters and travellers in the metro, as well as a sports photograph of Ajax footballer Jan van Halst. Working from Haarlem, he creates images in which action and personality sit close together: photographs that not only show what someone is doing, but also reveal something about who they are.
