About the photographer
Alex de Smit has been working professionally as a photographer since 1998, following his training at the School of Photography in The Hague. From his studio in Alphen aan den Rijn, he focuses primarily on portraits, stills, and landscapes. His style is solid and clear, with an eye for beautiful light, careful composition, and a visual structure akin to Amsterdam advertising photography: direct, precise, and without unnecessary embellishment.
Alex enjoys working for clients who know exactly what they want, but who also give him the space to contribute his own perspective and experience. He takes every assignment seriously, whether large or small, and works decisively toward a result that hits the mark. Good communication plays a major role in this process. By staying alert to visual trends and technical developments, he continues to innovate his work, with passion, enjoyment, and perfection as his constant foundation.

Circus Royal, Alphen aan den Rijn, 1998
This photograph literally came out of the old box. In 1998, I was a young, ambitious photographer who enjoyed devising unusual assignments for myself. When I saw Circus Royal set up in Alphen aan den Rijn, I knew immediately: I wanted to create a special image of it.
I hired a bus and arranged a powerful 5 kW halogen spotlight. On top of the bus, I set up my 4×5-inch plate camera. First, I made several costly but beautiful Type 55 Polaroids. Once a test shot showed the desired result, the sheet-film holders went into the camera for the final photograph.
The circus director had actually promised me an elephant. At the decisive moment, however, it did not appear: during the performance, it apparently had more important work to do. Fortunately, these two friendly clowns were willing to cooperate. In retrospect, that may have produced a more appealing and timeless image.
Later, the photograph was given a remarkable second life. It was used for the cover of W.D.F. Schildt’s book Circus Royal – 100 jaar liefde voor het circus.
