Scarlett Hooft Graafland – Explore the Unknown
Galerie LUMC shows recent photographs by Scarlett Hooft Graafland, made in landscapes of drought, cold and surreal beauty.

In Explore the Unknown, Galerie LUMC presents recent photographs by Scarlett Hooft Graafland. The images were made during journeys through Turkey, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Madagascar, Yemen, Bolivia, Norway and Egypt, among other places.
Hooft Graafland seeks out landscapes marked by drought or extreme cold, places that take on an unlikely, almost surreal beauty. In these environments she explores how people still live in connection with nature while that relationship is pressured by climate change and outside economic forces.
Performances in the landscape
Hooft Graafland’s photographs move between sculpture, performance and photography. On location she creates images with props and collaborates with local residents. The result is work that is personal and poetic, while also touching on climate change, womanhood and cultural identity.
The exhibition can be visited free of charge in the LUMC gallery from 26 June to 27 September 2026.
