Stephan Vanfleteren shows sixteen works at the Mauritshuis inspired by Vermeer, Rembrandt and other Old Masters.

Exhibition view of Pentimenti - Stephan Vanfleteren among the masters at the Mauritshuis.

In Pentimenti – Stephan Vanfleteren among the masters, the Mauritshuis shows how Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren has been inspired by the paintings in the collection. He created one work for each gallery room: sixteen works in total, fifteen of them new.

The photographs hang, stand and lie among their centuries-old sources of inspiration and invite visitors to look again at Vermeer, Rembrandt and other masters. The term pentimenti refers to traces of corrections or changes, a theme Vanfleteren extends to painting, history and human lives.

The Mauritshuis notes that Vanfleteren, like the seventeenth-century masters, does not shy away from death and transience; some images may be confronting.
