Helen Levitt – City at Play

Kunsthal Rotterdam presents Helen Levitt: City at Play, a major survey of one of the twentieth century’s most important street photographers. With more than 220 photographs, a film and colour slides, the exhibition brings together over fifty years of work from her full archive.

Levitt photographed street life in New York: children at play, encounters in doorways, chalk drawings, subway passengers and everyday scenes full of humour and tenderness. Her trip to Mexico City, the film In the Street and her later colour work are also included.

The exhibition is on view in Hall 1 of Kunsthal Rotterdam from 30 May to 4 October 2026. Kunsthal Rotterdam is usually open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00; visitors need an online ticket with a start time.
