Graciela Iturbide – Eyes to Fly With
FOMU presents the first major Belgian retrospective of Graciela Iturbide, with more than fifty years of photography.
Eyes to Fly With is the first major retrospective of Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide in Belgium. Her work explores themes such as identity, social relations, spirituality and transience.
The exhibition shows how Iturbide uses photography to explore herself and the world. It includes images around the Zapotec community in Oaxaca, the series White Fence about origin, migration and living conditions, and work centred on rituals and everyday traditions.
More than fifty years of photography
FOMU brings together around 160 works: from iconic black-and-white photographs to rarely shown vintage prints, colour photographs and contact sheets. Iturbide’s intimate photographs of Frida Kahlo’s long-closed bathroom, and work from India and Bangladesh, are also part of the exhibition.
The exhibition was developed in close collaboration with the artist and is a project by C/O Berlin Foundation, curated by Sophia Greiff and Melissa Harris.
