Eva Besnyö – The Liberated Camera
Fotomuseum Den Haag presents a major retrospective of Eva Besnyö, with work from its own collection around New Photography, Berlin, Bergen, Amsterdam and Dolle Mina.
This autumn, Fotomuseum Den Haag presents Eva Besnyö – The Liberated Camera, a major retrospective around the work of photographer Eva Besnyö (1910-2003). The museum draws on its own collection, described by Fotomuseum Den Haag as the largest Besnyö collection in the world.
The exhibition follows Besnyö’s life against the background of a changing Europe: from her first experiences with the camera in Budapest and her formative years in 1930s Berlin to her life and work in Bergen and Amsterdam. The Second World War and her later involvement with the Dolle Mina movement are also addressed.
New Photography
An important part of Besnyö’s work belongs to New Photography. In that movement, the camera was used to show reality in a direct, objective and experimental way. Surprising viewpoints, diagonal lines and clear compositions play a major role.
