Ellen von Unwerth: My Circus

Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht presents My Circus, an exhibition by German fashion and art photographer Ellen von Unwerth. The show features 160 photographs centred on fashion, pop culture, femininity, playfulness and glamour.
On view are images of Claudia Schiffer, with whom Von Unwerth first broke through as a photographer, alongside portraits of well-known models and pop artists such as Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, RuPaul, Beyoncé, Madonna, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna. The exhibition also includes intimate images from her first monograph Snaps from 1994, as well as two videos.
The circus forms the exhibition’s common thread. Von Unwerth worked at Circus Roncalli in Munich at a young age, and that experience returns in the exuberant use of colour, theatrical compositions and dynamism of her photography.
