DISCO – Wereldmuseum Amsterdam
Wereldmuseum Amsterdam explores disco as both a musical movement and a social revolution, with tracks, video, art, fashion, design and photography.
From 9 October 2026, Wereldmuseum Amsterdam presents DISCO, a large-scale exhibition about disco as both a musical movement and a social revolution. An 835 m² floor is transformed into a vibrant exploration of the dance floor, nightlife, emancipation and self-expression.
The exhibition shows how disco grew in the 1970s into a global culture centred on freedom, inclusivity and identity. Visitors move through hundreds of original tracks, videos, artworks, fashion, design and documentary material.
Photography and visual culture also play a clear role. Photographs by artists including Kwame Brathwaite, Michael Abramson and Meryl Meisler show how nightlife, Black is Beautiful, queer culture and fashion contributed to new forms of self-image and community.
DISCO was conceived by the Musée de la Musique – Philharmonie de Paris and expanded in Amsterdam with Dutch context. For visitors to Amsterdam, it adds a lively cultural stop just outside the city centre.
