Close to Léon Spilliaert – Dialogue with Contemporary Art
In Brussels, Léon Spilliaert enters into dialogue with contemporary art, including a strong photography section with Dirk Braeckman, Stephan Vanfleteren, Olivier van Rossum and Eddy Verloes.
Close to Léon Spilliaert. Dialogue with Contemporary Art brings the work of Léon Spilliaert together with that of eighteen contemporary artists. Drawings, watercolour, painting, collage, video and photography show how themes such as the sea, darkness, solitude, melancholy and quiet interiors return in new forms.
Extensive photography section
In close collaboration with photographer and co-curator Eddy Verloes, the photography section of the exhibition has been expanded. Work is shown by Dirk Braeckman, Stephan Vanfleteren, Olivier van Rossum and Eddy Verloes. Their nocturnal images, dark seascapes and solitary figures connect visually and thematically with Spilliaert’s world.
Verloes shows, among other works, Statues in the Storm (Bredene) from 2020, the photograph in which four dark figures move across the beach during a storm. Vanfleteren is represented with works including Transcripts of a Sea #086802 from 2025. The dark photography of Braeckman and the night work of Van Rossum are also part of the dialogue.
Visit
The exhibition can be visited free of charge from 28 August to 26 September 2026 at Native Auctions in Saint-Gilles, Brussels. Regular opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 11:00 to 18:00, and by appointment. The opening takes place on Thursday 27 August from 19:00 to 22:00 and is by reservation only.
