Andrzej Steinbach – Hier
With Hier, Huis Marseille introduces Andrzej Steinbach’s work to the Netherlands for the first time, presenting meticulously staged photography that questions how we look.

In Hier, Huis Marseille presents a selection of work made by Andrzej Steinbach over the past ten years, with particular attention to his latest series, Extensions, from 2024. This is the artist’s first exhibition in the Netherlands.
Steinbach constructs his images like a director. Figures, neutral backgrounds, objects and subtle variations in posture or clothing form typologically structured series. Through them, he examines how we assign meaning, roles and categories to what we see, even when much of the information is deliberately withheld.
The exhibition also includes work from series such as Society Begins with Three and Auto Erotik. References to the history of photography and social theory expose photographic conventions and unsettle the assumptions that underpin our perception.
