A workshop, Open Studio, and Q&A with DeLovie Kwagala, also known as Papa De, at the FUTURES Photography Hub in Amsterdam.
As part of the Pride Photo Residency, hosted at the FUTURES Photography Hub, Papa De is developing ME(MORIES), a project that revisits precolonial history through a family archive dating back to the 1970s. Centred on the Gomesi, the traditional dress worn by Ugandan women from the Buganda Kingdom and beyond, the project examines collective memory, gender performance, and the lasting presence of colonial legacies.
Papa De is an award-winning Ugandan visual artist and filmmaker whose multidisciplinary practice challenges the colonial gaze and documents the lives of African queer youth. Their work explores identity, belonging, migration, displacement, and climate justice.
