Retropia deliberately takes the opposite approach with the Vintage Glow, a filter that gives digital images a softer, warmer, and slightly nostalgic look.
The Retropia Vintage Glow is a physical filter that screws onto the front of a lens. It slightly softens the sharpest details, reduces contrast in places, and makes highlights bloom. Streetlights, neon, reflections, and backlighting in particular take on a soft glow.
Retropia describes the effect as film-like halation. Technically, it is not quite the same as true halation in analog film, which occurs when light is reflected back through the film layer. The Vintage Glow effect is closer to that of familiar diffusion and mist filters, which have long been used to soften the clinical sharpness of modern digital cameras.
Especially Interesting for Backlighting and Evening Photography
The filter’s effect is most apparent with strong light sources. Think of a low sun, streetlights, neon signs, or backlighting in portraits. This creates a visible glow around the highlights and gives the image a dreamier character.
The effect is quite pronounced, so this is probably not something you would leave on every lens all the time. With strong, direct light sources, the glow can quickly become too prominent. That is precisely why it is primarily a creative filter that you use deliberately when a photo could benefit from a little more atmosphere and imperfection.
